775 Field Quick Reference Sheet

775 Field Quick Reference Sheet PDF

With RDA, much of the information about related editions we used to record in notes should now go into the 775 field. This is a linking field which will help create the vital pathways between works, expressions, and manifestations in our next-generation bibliographic systems.

UCSD policy:

Use the 775 field with the appropriate relationship designator from RDA Appendix J to describe reproductions and revised editions where the title has changed. Otherwise, use catalogers' judgment in deciding to provide information about other works, expressions, etc. When using a 775 field, a 5xx note is not necessary.

Examples:

Other categories where 775 fields could be useful (see RDA Appendix J for the relevant relationship designator):

  • Sound recording reissues
  • Facsimiles
  • Manuscript vs. published editions
  • Frequency editions
  • Language editions (For translations use 765 or 767)
  • Adaptations, abridgements, etc.

Use caution, however. Not all WEMI relationships will be recorded in a 775 field. See the MARC21 Format for Bibliographic Data 76X-78X Linking Entries section for more guidance on which MARC fields to use.
