GENERAL INFORMATION
This document is intended to serve as a guide for
cataloging individual manuscript and typescript materials in the
Mandeville Special Collections Library. MSCL Quick Cataloging
Guides are merely outline very general practice. For more
detailed information please refer (as needed) to MARC Standards, OCLC Bibliographic
Formats and Standards, and the cataloging standards appropriate for
the materials being cataloged (identified below).
INDIVIDUAL MANUSCRIPT MATERIALS
Personal letters, manuscript books, typescripts,
organization documents and other non-published, frequently
single-instance textual materials maintained in the Mandeville Special
Collections Library are processed, cataloged and housed differently
from larger manuscript collections. Such materials are cataloged
according to AACR2 Chap. 4, rather than PPM or DACS. Materials
are given Library of Congress classification numbers and housed in the
book collections of the Library.
TIPS FOR CATALOGING ON OCLC
- DO NOT USE macros set up for
cataloging archival
collections
- Use
the “wfm” workform
- Nota Bene: If you are cataloging a photograph
or postcard
primarily for its visual aspect,
use the “wfmg” workform and refer to the appropriate MSCL Quick
Cataloging Guide.
- Change fixed field value for "Type" to:
"t" for manuscript language material, including handwritten,
typescript (single instance) or computer printout.
"d" for manuscript
music material
For further explanation and examples, refer to Type of
Record on the OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards page.
- Fixed field "BLvl": Code as "m" (for monographic materials
-- only collections should receive BLvl "c"
- Fixed field "Ctrl": Code as “a”
OTHER REMINDERS
- In the 300 field, describe the item
in the usual
bibliographic manner, i.e. number of pages or leaves, NOT in terms of
linear
feet.
- The "Mat Type" in the Innovative record
(established
by "Mat Type" selected in the OCLC Macro) should be coded “h” for
"Archives and Manuscripts."
