MSCL Policy for "Laid in" Materials

Reviewed May 7, 2007 by Christine Megowan.

Laid in materials that form a part of the publication, which typically include items found in artists' books, unbound leaves of plates, or detached envelopes, should be kept with the piece as issued. Bind the piece with cloth tape when necessary, or indicate that a box be made, to insure that the loose items do not accidentally fall out. When the publisher's binding is not designed to accommodate the laid in materials adequately, seek advice about suitable housing.

For laid in materials that do not form a part of the publication, seek a retention decision from the Department Head.

  • A. Discards are tossed without making any note.
  • B. If the item is retained, add the following note:
590 Laid in materials have been removed and cataloged separately. Search under Call Number: [call no.]
