II.K.3
            SPECIAL COLLECTIONS CATALOGING PROCEDURE

                      SOUTHWORTH MONOGRAPHS

Reviewed Nov 17, 1998 by Richard Lindemann

Add all new monographic Southworth acquisitions, including
variant editions, to the Southworth "monographs" collection; the
"pamphlet" collection was closed for new additions when most of
that collection was microfilmed by Research Publications in 1986.

When groups of minor pamphlets, leaflets, broadsides,
posters, and the like are acquired that have similar authorship,
subject matter, or other such characteristics, consider
cataloging them as a made-up set, following procedure II.K.4.
Refer to the numerous sets already cataloged this way in the
Southworth pamphlet collection for precedent in determining the
kinds of groups that form meaningful sets. Do not, however, add
new titles to existing made-up sets in the pamphlet collection
that have been microfilmed.

050 Always determine whether an LC call number assigned by
090 another library, including LC, should be expanded to
incorporate new DP269+ numbers added to the DP schedule in
recent years. Be alert to the possibility that variant
editions of the work in hand may already have been cataloged
for Southworth, and in such cases, match existing call
     numbers and cuttering.

Avoid using DP269.17 ("pamphlets and other minor works"),
since so many Southworth materials would thus be uselessly
     classified.

500 When the author, title, etc., of a work do not adequately
describe its content, add a brief note summarizing the
     vantage point (i.e. Nationalist/fascist, Republican/leftist,
etc.), if it is ascertainable, and general subject matter.

590 Herbert Southworth was not specifically noted in most
catalog records as former owner of the core Southworth
collection, but do make a provenance note (and corresponding
added entry as "former owner", "signer," or "inscriber", as
appropriate) whenever his signature or a provenance
     inscription appears in a book.

Ex: 590 UCSD's copy provenance: Herbert Rutledge
          Southworth.

Ex: 590 UCSD's copy inscribed to Herbert Southworth by
          Juan Negr¡n.

6xx As with call numbers, as described above, always determine
whether subject headings assigned by another library,

                                                   II.K.3 (cont.)

including LC, should be expanded to incorporate additions
and changes made to LCSH in recent years. Refer liberally
to previous Southworth cataloging precedent to determine the
most appropriate subject headings for a particular work.

7xx Be generous in tracing political parties, relief
organizations, and other corporate bodies who published or
otherwise issued Southworth materials. The Southworth
Collection itself is an exceedingly rich source for
establishing names of such groups, particularly subgroups of
Franco's Falange party and the various leftist parties and
unions active during the Spanish Civil War.

730 Southworth contains numerous single issues of serials which
have monographic titles and so are most sensibly cataloged
monographically. In these cases, trace the serial title in
a 730 field and add a 500 note such as "Issued as no. 36 of
     Radio nacional."

Add the following heading to all records:

793 0 Southworth Spanish Civil War Collection.
