            SPECIAL COLLECTIONS CATALOGING PROCEDURE

                        Press Collection

Reviewed Nov 17, 1998 by Richard Lindemann

Items that formerly would have been added to the Press
Collection are now added to Rare (cpx, etc.). Future
reclassification projects will convert the remaining Press
Collection materials to LCC numbering and incorporation into
Rare.

The local classification scheme "PRS" is obsolete; classify
newly acquired items following LC Classification in 050/090
fields.

050 Classify items following LC Classification, including the
090 publication year; the local classification scheme employing
     090 "PRS" is obsolete.

260 When tracing a printer that does not also serve as
publisher, describe in |e and |f of the 260 field in an
AACR2 record. In a pre-AACR2 record, put this information
in a note (since |e and |f are not valid).

500 Add appropriate notes to describe all special features of
fine press books, particularly those which also are being
described in added entries. Whenever possible, use quoted
notes taken from colophon or elsewhere, omitting unnecessary
verbage which lends little to the description and does not
support tracings. When quoting would be awkward or too
riddled with ellipses, compose a brief note instead.

7xx Trace the printer, publisher or others associated with the
creation of the item as indicated by the curator, adding the
appropriate relator term in each case. If the press is both
publisher and printer of the book, use relator term
"publisher". Substantiate all tracings in appropriate
     notes.

755 Fine press books tend to have interesting artifactual
characteristics, so be alert to the possibilities for
tracing illustration techniques, bindings, paper, and
     printing/publishing terminology.

949 Code all items for Rare, being sure to code broadsides and
other items appropriate to map case storage cpxm.
