Collection-specific Titles (730/793)

Collection-specific uniform titles are entered in field 730/793 of the bibliographic record. Current cataloging policy is to use the 793 field except in the case of MSS/RSS or other unique items, when the 730 is acceptable for use in the master record.

The uniform title should complement the item location code assigned to the piece being cataloged (e.g., any bibliographic record that has an attached item record coded "cpq" will include "730/793 0_ American Institute of Wine & Food Culinary Collection"). When MSCL owns copies in more than one collection, the bibliographic record must include a 730/793 for each collection (e.g., when an item appears both in our Hill and our Goodman collections, the bibliographic record contains two 730 fields: 730 0_ Hill Collection of Pacific Voyages; 730 0_ Jessie H. and John B. Goodman Collection).

Likewise, when an item contains multiple facets reflecting material format and collection affinity (e.g, a manuscript item in the Archive for New Poetry), the bibliographic record will also contain more than one 730/793 field: 730 0_ UCSD Manuscripts; 730/793 0_ Archive for New Poetry.

Collection-specific uniform titles are established locally. Aside from UCSD MSS and UCSD RSS headings, be careful not to include them in OCLC records during the process of enhancing OCLC records or when creating original inputs. This is accomplished best by using the 793 tag, which exports but drops out of the OCLC master record.
