Call Number Suffixes

MSCL uses call number suffixes to indicate various things about an item. This is a cheat sheet for all the various additions to call numbers used in MSCL as of May 2007.

aUsed for facsimile reproductions. The call number year is assigned according to the original, plus the work letter "a" to indicate that the work is a facsimile. For example, a 2002 facimile edition of a book published in 1840 would have a call number like this: PN45|b.A64 1840a
b, etc. When multiple editions of the same work, with the same main entry, are published within the same year (for example, a New York imprint and a separate London imprint), subsequent editions are cataloged with the work letter "b", "c", "d", etc. tacked onto the end of the call number to differentiate between them.
zA "z" at the end of a call number indicates that the year given in the call number is uncertain. See the Subject Cataloging Manual: Shelflisting, rule G140 for a more detailed explanation.
B/WUsed for "Bound With" or "Housed With" items. See "Bound with" records for more details.
AB-1/A, etc.Art Bins--When cataloging an item that is to be housed in the Art Bins, assign a LC call number as you normally would, but add the Art Bin location number to the end of the call number. (i.e. DP269.15|b.M67 1936 AB-19/C)
VLTItem is housed in the Vault.
