MSCL Policy for "Bound with" and "Housed with" items

Reviewed May 2, 2007 by Christine Megowan.

"Bound withs" are instances in which two or more separate bibliographic entities have been bound into a single volume after publication. They are of interest to researchers because they can be used to determine possible printing relationships as well as binding affinity among various divisions within a volume.

Sometimes, especially with early imprints, they are easily confused with collective issues. For example, an item that seems to be a "bound with" may in fact be a publication that lacks a collective title, or one in which parts previously published separately have been reissued collectively.

BOUND-WITHS

For items that were bound together after publication, create separate bibliographic records for each title and indicate their relationship to only the first title using field 590.

In cases of doubt whether the titles were issued together by the publisher, create separate bibliographic records according to the regular "Bound With" directions.

Record for first title:

050/090Call number of first title
245First Title
590UCSD's copy bound with: Title #2 / statement of responsibility. Place : Publisher, 1999 -- Title #3 / author. Place : Publisher, 1999 -- Title #4 / author. Place: Publisher, 1999.

Records for subsequent titles:

050/090Call number of first title with suffix "B/W" (e.g. 090 PR1234 $b .B75 H23 1995 B/W)
2452nd title
590UCSD's copy bound with: First title / statement of responsibility. Place : Publisher, 1999.

HOUSED-WITHS

Sometimes, MSCL houses multiple items together in one envelope/box. In such cases, treat these items as you would a "bound with," with the exception that the 590 note should read: "UCSD's copy housed with: ..." The call number suffix is still B/W.

COLLECTIVE ISSUES (WITHOUT COLLECTIVE TITLES):

For volumes that were bound together at the time of publication, whenever possible, follow AACR2rev 1.1G3: "If describing the item as a unit, transcribe the titles of the individually titled works in the order in which they appear in the chief source of information or, if there is no single chief source of information, in the order in which they appear in the item, treating multiple sources of information as if they were one source."
