Ken, Stephen, Peter, Jim, Chris, Sandra; here's how I treated
the audio DVD that came through. If this is OK with everyone
I'll put this up as a template on our web page. I considered
an 006 with multimedia designation as we do for enhanced CDs,
but left that off since it is not used on any other videodiscs.
Let me know if anything else needs adjusting here.
Thanks, David

Hi David,
Ken Stephen and I just talked about this thing.
Our recommendation is that the Item type be 59, that
material type be D (for CDS) since most people will be
searching for something that is almost exclusively audio
as a CD, but that the 007 field contradict the the
information in the 245 and the 300 (which should both
describe it as a videodisc). Also, it will have an FVLDV
call number, both for ease of shelving and to underline
the fact that it needs to be played in a DVD player.
We thought we would leave up to your discretion as to
when this would apply.
Jim, would you be willing to nose around (maybe at MLA?)
to see how other institutions are handling things like this?
We may have to revisit this if this becomes a more
common material.

Hi Ken and Peter,
An audio DVD came across my desk this morning. For the
time being it is labeled as MUD 55090. I left that alone,
but I suspect some other treatment will be needed for
this and other audio DVDs.
The bib record is .B42962560
The output format is 5.1 surround sound (L/R front, center,
and L/R rear channels + an optional subwoofer channel)
which requires a video theater receiver/amplifier common
in home theater systems. That is the ideal output format,
although most DVD players will output a simple stereo
audio signal which is processed from the intended '5.1'
signal. A DVD player is required for playback. A
normal CD player or computer CDrom cannot read the disc.
Besides this format there are several others that are
being used for audio DVD production, Dolby surround sound
and 'super CDs' (an audio DVD requiring a dedicated processor
for proper playback, but which can also be output from an
audio CD player in stereo) being just 2 examples. It looks
like another format struggle will go on until there are a lot
more audio DVDs and a dominant format begins to emerge.
Some questions:
Bib record -
1) What 'mat' type should we use in the bib record?
v (video) is used for this one, although this is
primarily an audio format. There are some images,
mostly author/title labels at the beginning of each
track, but there are also a few slides for about
half of the tracks.
2) What should the branch be? fvl is currently selected
as the branch.
Item record -
3) What should the call number be like? MUD, FVLDV, something
else?
4) What should the ITYPE be? I pasted in an old email I archived
about DVD item types. It could also be classified as an
ITYPE 18 or some other ITYPE if that would help define
things better.
5) What should the LOC code be?
Packaging -
6) What kind of case should be used to keep the disc and booklet?
The DVD came in a standard DVD case, but the booklet is the
size of a regular CD case, which could be used if it was
decided to keep audio DVDs together with the CDs.

Hi All, This email is to inform you that
new item types have been established, and approved
by the various user groups, for the new format known
as DVD, and for guides for DVDs. The item types and
the various types of DVDs and guides are listed below.
The item types will be added to InnoPac shortly, but
decisions on loan rules and whether DVDs may be loaned
to Circuit users must be made by folks responsible for
the various collections. Please contact Greg Ferguson
to establish loan rules for DVDs in your collections.
