This is the value supported for the <structMap> TYPE attribute for objects conforming to this profile.

Physical indicates a purely physical structure, e.g. a single image without subdivisions.

The root <mets> element must include a LABEL attribute value

The root <mets> element must include an OBJID attribute value that uniquely identifies the object in the UCSD repository.

A conforming METS record must contain a <metsHdr> element

The <metsHdr> element must contain for the METS record the CREATEDATE attribute.

The <metsHdr> element should contain a LASTMODDATE attribute reflecting the date of the last modification to the METS record.

The <metsHdr> must include a child <agent> element to identify the UCSD Libraries department responsible for creating / modifying the METS record.

A UCSD METS record conforming to this profile must contain a <dmdSec> containing a <dmdWrap> with <xmlData>. The <xmlData> elements must conform to the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS).

A UCSD METS record conforming to this profile must contain a /mods/titleinfo/title element.

A UCSD METS record conforming to this profile must contain a /mods/name/namePart. If the creator is unknown, the value should be "Creator unidentified".

A UCSD METS record conforming to this profile must contain a /mods/typeOfResource element for which the value must be "still image".

A UCSD METS record conforming to this profile must contain a /mods/originInfo/publisher element naming the UCSD department that issued the digital object, e.g. Art and Architecture Library. The URL for the repository's main page should be included with the name.

A UCSD METS record conforming to this profile must contain a /mods/originInfo/dateIssued element. If a date is not known, the value should be "Date unknown".

Each application of descriptive metadata should contain the following descriptive metadata elements when they are applicable: genre (/mods/genre), subject (/mods/subject/...), language of the object (/mods/language), and name of the project or collection to which the object belongs (/mods/relatedItem/titleinfo/title).

Additional <dmdSec> elements may be used. They must contain <dmdWrap> with <xmlData>.

A conforming METS record must have an <amdSec> section. The <amdSec> section must contain one <techMD> section and one <rightsMD> section.

The <xmlData> in a <techMD> section in a conforming METS record must contain elements from the PREMIS schema.

A conforming METS record must contain a /premis/object/objectIdentifierType element.

A conforming METS record must contain a /premis/object/objectIdentifierValue element.

A conforming METS record must contain a /premis/object/preservationLevel element, the value should be either "Full" or "Bit-level".

A conforming METS record must contain a /premis/object/objectCategory element with the value stated as "File".

A conforming METS record must contain a /premis/object/objectCharacteristics/compositionLevel element.

A conforming METS record must contain a /premis/object/objectCharacteristics/fixity/messageDigestAlgorithm element.

A conforming METS record must contain a /premis/object/objectCharacteristics/fixity/messageDigest element.

The <amdSec> section in a conforming METS record must include one a <rightsMD> section.

The <xmlData> in a <rightsMD> section in a conforming METS record must contain elements from the METSRights schema.

A conforming METS record must include a <rts:RightsDeclarationMD> element with the RIGHTSCATEGORY attribute encoded as either "Copyrighted," "Copyright unknown," or "Public Domain."

A conforming METS record must include a <rts:RightsDeclaration> from the METSRights Schema with the value expressed as either "Copyright of the creator" for works for which the copyright holder can be identified, "Copyright status of the image is unknown" for images for which the copyright holder cannot be identified and the work can not be said to have entered the public domain, or "Public domain" for works known to have entered the public domain.

A conforming METS record may include a <rts:RightsHolderName> from the METSRights Schema for those images for which the copyright holder can be identified. The value encoded is to be the name of the copyright holder; usually the creator of the image content.

Provenance metadata pertaining to modification of the original digital image may be expressed as MIX encoded technical metadata in the <techMD> section instead of a separate <provenanceMD> section.

Elements in the <sourceMD> and <provenanceMD> sections should be expressed using an extension schema endorsed by the METS Editorial Board designed for expressing source and provenance metadata.

The <fileSec> for a compliant METS record must contain one <fileGrp> for the archive image referenced in the METS record.

The <fileGrp> must have an associated USE attribute, encoded as "archive image."

The <fileSec> may contain additional <fileGrp> for other versions of an image referenced in a METS record compliant with this profile. In such instances, the <fileGrp> must have an associated USE attribute, encoded as either "reference image" for higher resolution versions or "thumbnail image" for very low resolution versions.

In the case of <fileGrp> with the USE attribute encoded as "thumbnail image", the image file must have the mimetype of image/gif

Each <file> element must reference the pertinent <techMD> and <rightsMD> elements in the <amdSec> section via its AMDID attribute value. In addition it may reference pertinent <sourceMD> and <provenanceMD> elements, if present. The <file> element should only reference ID values at the levels of <techMD>, <rightsMD>, <sourceMD>, and <provenanceMD>.

A compliant METS record must contain only one <structMap> element

The <structMap> element must contain a TYPE attribute encoded with the value "physical."

Each <div> must include a LABEL attribute value, which is derived from and identical to the value encoded in the /mods/titleInfo/title element.

The <div> element must contain one or more <fptr> elements, each of which references an individual <file> element representing a version of the image.

The <fptr> element must use the FILEID attribute to point directly to a <file> element.

The <fptr> element may not contain an <area>, <par>, or <seq> element. These elements are not supported in objects conforming to this profile.

The <mptr> element is not supported in this profile.

This profile stipulates no requirements for the <structLink> element.

This profile stipulates no requirements for the <behaviorSec> element.

Only <file> elements will reference elements in the <techMD>, <sourceMD>, <rightsMD>, and <provenanceMD> sections. That is, administrative metadata is always and only expressed in conjunction with the content files.

Only the <div> element will reference metadata in the <dmdSec> section. That is, descriptive metadata is always and only expressed in conjunction with division of the <structMap> and not in conjunction with the content file.

This profile supports only image files, be they pictorial or textual in character.

The profile does not prescribe a format for the image, but it is strongly recommended that the file format and resolution for at least one version of the image be of an archival quality.

The profile does not prescribe association to any behaviors.

The profile does not prescribe referencing of external metadata records. If an external metadata record is referenced, it is recommended that the file be valid for the schema in which it is written, i.e., that it be a valid MARC record.
