1999 CJK SECTION GOALS
Goal 1: Acquire and make available to users library materials in the Chinese
and Japanese languages in the most timely, accurate and cost-effective
manner.

Process orders from receiving order requests to mailing purchase orders
to venders within 1 week.

Unpack book shipments within 1 week of receipt.
Goal 2: Catalog current Chinese, Japanese materials in the most timely
fashion.

Copy search new books within 2 days after the books are stamped and tattletaped.

Exact match LC or member copy: Catalog within 2 weeks.

Variant LC or member copy: Catalog within 3 weeks.

Serials: Catalog upon receipt.

Microfilms: Copy catalog microfilms within 4 weeks.

IP books: Process within 2 days after copy search.

Limit number of books at each catalogers desk area to one book shelf and
one truck to ensure efficiency of processing.
Goal 3: Reduce CJK backlog.

Continue to decrease Chinese backlog by incorporate backlog books into
daily cataloging workflow and by re-adjust Chinese catalogers cataloging
responsibilities.

Continue to decrease Japanese backlog by hiring a casual half-time LA I,
instead of student employee, to process clerical acquisition and cataloging
routines. Sending OCLC TecPro 20-30 titles each month for original cataloging.
Goal 4: Maintain our technical knowledge and enhance our cataloging knowledge
in the following areas: Passport for Windows. CJK Plus 3.0. Innopac. Melvyl.
Windows 95. Windows NT. Netscape. LC Catalogers Desk Top. LC Classification
Plus. Word Perfect. Microsoft Word. Excel for Windows 95. cc: Mail.

Attend the job related computer classes in the areas listed above to enhance
our knowledge, and to keep up with the new development.

Attend Department meetings and Ask CCG session whenever possible to learn
computer related tips and tricks.

Attend cataloging forum whenever it is offered to learn specific cataloging
issues.

Regularly check TPOT to keep up with updated library policies and cataloging
procedures, etc.

Incorporate uniform titles into Chinese and Japanese cataloging. Study
and evaluate the usage of uniform titles in Chinese and Japanese cataloging.
Goal 5: Special Projects

Finish Japanese re-exporting by adding vernacular fields to Innopac records
which lack those fields (half were done 1998).

Catalog 750 volumes of Japanese gifts.
Goal 6: Develop a section web page that includes CJK acquisition and cataloging
procedures, and other job related documents.
