Student to Staff Exception to Recruitment
Home

One method for filling a temporary staffing need is to request a student to staff exception to recruitment. Blink has a page that provides general information to supervisors regarding the use of an exception to recruitment: http://blink.ucsd.edu/Blink/External/Topics/Policy/0,1162,165,00.html

Below are UCSD Libraries Human Resource Department instructions for initiating a student to staff exception:

  1. Obtain approval from your Department Head and AUL.  Forward approval to Monique Tokuhara in DBF and Stacey McDermaid in LHR.
  2. Identify a funding source for the salary (GA funds, department operations budget, etc.).
  3. Write a job card on Blink: http://joblink.ucsd.edu/mwb/jobdesc/index.html
Save the job card for routing and send it to Stacey McDermaid.
  4. Have the student complete, print, and sign the UCSD Employment Resume / Application Form: http://joblink.ucsd.edu/awb/resume/create_resume.html and submit it to Stacey McDermaid.
  5. Send email to Stacey McDermaid stating:
    Desired start date
Desired end date (Appointment duration is limited to 5 months or 875 hours)
    Requested payroll title
    Requested salary
    Requested step
    Requested FTE (percentage of time)
    Student status (grad or undergrad)
Initial start date with department (when the student was first hired)

Please submit the above materials to LHR three weeks prior to the requested start date for processing.
