Invalid character strings for autostats
Prepared by John Archer
October 6, 1997
Revised February 20, 1998
Character strings that cannot be included as part of one's
initials or type of cataloging:
JUL
AUG
SEP
OCT
NOV
DEC
JAN
FEB
MAR
APR
MAY
JUN
These strings are reserved for the month. Each month a
batch file searches for lines containing the first three letters
of everyother month and deletes it from the data. This is done
to keep the data accurate for the entire year. Why is this
necessary? Suppose cataloging cataloges something in March. It
is counted correctly in March, but in April when it is sent to
Book Repair it is again coded, this time by Book Repair to be
included in the monthly statistics. This time the note
Cataloging place in the item record in March is again retrieved.
To keep an accurate running total for the month of April, all
notes containing MAR are deleted. This would include a note such
as MARC.
Please note also that all notes are converted to upper case
to process the data accurately.
