Branches and Classification Numbers

Greetings catalogers,

The good folks in Circulation tell me they routinely find books which should belong to AAL, Music, and S&E labeled for the SSH collection. Seems like an explanation about how this can happen and a reminder regarding classification and collections is in order.

Some time ago, certain class areas of the SSH collection were transferred to other branches and collections:
N, SB, and TR are all now part of the Art & Architecture Library
M is now the Music Library
Q-QD are now part of the S&E Library

All incoming books coded as "ck" for SSH stacks should be changed by catalogers to the correct location and branch according to the classifications listed above. This applies only to items coded SSH stacks--do not catalog books flagged for AAL, BML, CLICS, CMRR, IR/PS, MCL, Music, SSH Ref, SIO, or any other locations for the branches listed above.

Catalogers will routinely receive new books coded as SSH stacks that should be cataloged for the branches above because of our current workflows and procedures for incoming books. The load table for the approval plan workflow designates all approval items as "SSH stacks" (bib branch is "SSH" and item location is "ck"). Branch is specified for Direct orders upon order, but may be changed once a book is reviewed. Approval and Direct order books are reviewed by bibliographers and flags are inserted to designate which branch or collection the book selected for. Bibliographers and Acquisitions staff are not aware of the call numbers these items will be given, and most are flagged for SSH stacks. The Library counts on catalogers to provide the correct location based on the classification, and on EV students to serve as a backup check.

Please see me if you have any questions or suggestions. Ideas on how we can prevent or correct this branch problem would be especially appreciated! Thanks--Shirley
