Frequently during the cataloging process, catalogers note the presence of URLs which do not represent equivalent electronic versions of the text but are bibliographically related to the text to some degree.  Depending on what the relationship is, UCSD catalogers may record information about the related site, both in the note fields and the 856 field.  This type of  information may also be part of the enhancement process on serial records.  It is necessary to check the URL (usually from the RogerWeb record) to make sure it is valid.

The related web site information is added directly to the Pactech record, or, the OCLC record may be enhanced and then exported to our catalog.

Variable fields: Unless otherwise noted below, do not add information about the related web site to the bibligraphic  record for the print.

500     Generally add all related web site information about electronic tables of contents, supplements, or updating information for books or monographic computer in the 500 field, except true supplements.  Electronic supplements (print or electronic) are mentioned  in the 525 field.

740 field: If the cataloger wishes to add an uncontrolled title for the related web site, use this field with the second indicator blank.

        740 0    Supporting information for Environmental science & technology.

7XX linking fields: Do not use.

856 field: Add the related web site  electronic resource location in this field.  When enhancing an OCLC record, put the A public note ($z), explaining the relationship of the web site  is necessary at the beginning of the field. Remember to add $2 http at the end of the URL. It is also MANDATORY to check the URL by testing it from the RogerWeb record.

When the web site only includes a portion of the journal (e.g., table of contents, supplementary information), give the information in $3 in the OCLC record.  In PAC, edit the $3 to a $z (because $3 does not display in PAC).
