Cataloging CJK sound recordings and moving image materials
Apply AACR2, the LCRIs, MARC 21, and LCSH in conjunction with the following
UCSD documents for cataloging CJK sound recordings and moving image materials:
- sound recordings
- copy: Editing Guidelines for OCLC Records: Sound Recordings
- original: Inputting Guidelines for OCLC Records: Sound Recordings
- moving image materials
- copy: Copy Cataloging Field Editing Guidelines: Videos and Films
- original: Inputting Guidelines for OCLC Records: Moving Image Materials
- both copy and original: Videos and Films: Technical Processing Notes
For original inputs, as a general guideline, view the main and concluding titles
to provide an accurate 245 title proper transcription, statement of responsibility
and date of issue. The director and producer-and in some cases the screenwriter,
main cinematographer, main editor, and composer of music-are generally the most
important people involved in the production. Give their names and functions
in a 508 note if not already in the subfield c of the 245. Don't do further
research if the container or credits fail to list all the people working in
these roles. Give a cast credit (511 note) for the main performers in feature
films or narrator for other films. Frequently, for both 508 and 511 notes, you
can use the container as a guideline for who is most important, as these are
the people the publisher chose to feature. As with cataloging other kinds of
materials, your item in hand is the main source, and in most cases it is unnecessary
to go beyond it to provide information item with the exception of the 520 summary
note when your container lacks enough information.
Modify the instructions in the above documents as follows.
- Item with bibliographic record in OCLC or Roger
- CJK staff performs all cataloging.
- Item with no bibliographic record in OCLC or Roger
- Sound recording or moving image material: popular or folk music
- CJK staff performs all cataloging.
- The principle for the summary note (which is tagged 520) is
to construct it using the source that would be the quickest. Therefore,
base the 520 field on the first listed source that gives sufficient
information:
- the item's container
- Internet sources
- the viewed item
- Assign subject headings as instructed in Subject Cataloging
Manual: Subject Headings:
- folk music = H 1917
- popular music = H 1916.5
- Jim reviews cataloging.
- Sound recording: classical music
- CJK staff performs descriptive cataloging, except uniform titles,
and related authority control.
- Jim reviews the partial record, and completes it with uniform titles
(when appropriate) and subject analysis that is based on the information
in that record.
- Sound recording: not popular, folk, or classical music
- CJK staff performs descriptive cataloging and related authority
control.
- Jim reviews the partial record, and completes it with subject analysis
that is based on the information in that record.
- Moving image material: not popular or folk music
- CJK staff performs descriptive cataloging and related authority
control.
- The principle for the participant or performer note (which is
tagged 511) and the summary note (which is tagged 520) is to construct
it using the source that would be the quickest. Therefore, base
the 511 and 520 fields on the first listed source that gives sufficient
information:
- the item's container
- Internet sources
- the viewed item
- Jim reviews the partial record, and completes it with subject analysis
that is based on the information in that record.
