Effective immediately, books that arrive for processing in CUL with
book jackets will retain those jackets through processing. In the
past, book jackets were removed when books were sent to the In Process
areas to "recycle' (to wait 1 year for another search for cataloging
copy). The valuable bibliographic information found on many book
jackets was lost, and catalogers had to take more time to track down
information for bibliographic description and access.

We are now preserving that information, so do not be surprised when you
see book jackets on books in the Open In Process Area. Just in case
the book jacket strays away while the item is in the open area, the
Acquisitions Dept. will pencil the I.P. number on the flyleaf. The
books will continue to be property stamped and Tattletaped for
security control.

We will, of course, continue to preserve the book jackets for the
Undergraduate Library, where the policy is to cover the book jackets
with plastic and keep them on the books for regular shelving.
