CUL CATALOG DEPARTMENT BARCODING PROCEDURES FOR MONOGRAPHS

--------------------------------------------------------------------

APRIL 24, 1998 UPDATE: Undergrad books are no longer being barcoded
on the dust jacket and first interior page. The barcodes are placed
on the upper left area of the cover and on the upper center area of
the first interior page, like SSH and the other branches.

This change occurred after the discovery of mold last year, but some
books in the processing stream may be barcoded the old way.
Catalogers are asked to re-barcode any UGL books with barcodes on the
dust jacket and toss the dust jacket to avoid later confusion.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

GENERAL NOTE: This procedure applies only to books. Barcoding
procedures for sound recordings, cassettes, videos, micro fiche
and film, etc. can be found in the units which handle these
materials.
GENERAL NOTE: If the book to be barcoded does not allow you to
follow the guidelines below, or if you have any questions about
barcode placement, CONSULT YOUR SUPERVISOR.

Hardbound books, Pam bound books, and paperback books with a
continuous cover over the front, spine, and back:

1. Use 2-up barcodes.

2. Place the first barcode horizontally on the upper left
corner of the book cover. For hardbound books, place
barcodes at least 1/2 inch from the top or side of the
cover. For Pam bound books or paperback books, place
barcodes at least 1 inch from the top or side of the cover,
so they won't be cut or lost when the book is trimmed for
binding. Do not place barcodes where the book will fold or
crease. Do not cover important information such as the IP
label, title, author, volume numbering, or series statement.

NOTE: Undergrad retains book jackets, so place the first barcode
in the upper left corner of the dust jacket, rather than the book
cover.
NOTE: For recats, etc., where the call number label is already
on the book, place the outer barcode just below that label.

3. Place the second barcode in the upper middle of the first
available interior page. Avoid covering important
information such as title, author, volume number, series
     statement, illustrations, etc.

Example of barcode placement

Items requiring binding: dissertations and other loose paged
items contained in an envelope, items that are stapled or spiral
bound, or any item with an exposed spine:

1. Use 2-up barcodes.

2. Place the first barcode in the upper middle of the first
available interior page. This is sometimes the cover,
sometimes the title page, and sometimes something else.
Avoid covering important information such as title, author,
volume number, series statement, illustrations, etc.

3. Using as little removable tape as possible, tape the second
barcode face-down (with its wax paper backing intact), to
the face of the first barcode. Bindery staff will apply
this barcode to the cover once the book is bound.

Rebarcoding

1. Before rebarcoding any book, check InnoPac to make sure that
there is no item record with the old barcode number. If you
find an item record with the old barcode, you must either
delete the item record, or replace the barcode number with
your new barcode number. Generally, Copy Searchers will
delete the old item record, as it will be an IP item record.
Catalogers may decide on a case by case basis whether to
delete the item record, or to replace the barcode number in
the item record. Consult your supervisor if you have any
     questions.

  2. Always make sure that the old barcode is either covered by
the new barcode, removed, or marked-out so it won't
accidentally be mistaken for the correct barcode.
