FORMAT INTEGRATION WORKSHOP: MAJOR CHANGES FOR BOOKS

by Crystal Graham
February 7, 1995

This is a summary of the major changes for books due to
format integration. More detailed information is available in
the USMARC Format for Bibliographic Data. Special fields for
Special Collections (e.g., $5) and CJK (e.g., $6) are
not shown in these examples.

                         CHANGES IN TAGS FOR NOTES

Four types of notes formerly tagged as 500 general notes in the
books format are now coded with specific tags for
numbering, language, issuing body, and accompanying computer
diskettes.

515 -- Numbering peculiarities note (primarily used for
multivolume sets)

     250 3rd ed.
     300 2 v. ; $c 26 cm.
515 Vol. 2 lacks edition statement.

          Engineering Excellence.

                         CONTENTS NOTE SUBFIELDING

Subfields have been defined for the elements of the 505
contents note. Use of these subfields is optional.
Contents notes may be coded at base level (with all data in $a)
or at enhanced level (using three new, repeatable
subfields).

Base level records:

Second indicator = [blank]
Subfield code = $a

Enhanced level records:

Second indicator = 0
Subfield codes:
$g - Miscellaneous information (e.g., vol. numbering, extent
information)

* Note that the $t is repeated at the beginning of each
title, regardless of whether there are intervening
subfields.

              NOTES FOR MICROFORM REPRODUCTIONS &
               PHOTOCOPIES

Notes about microform reproductions, photocopies, and other
macroreproductions, formerly input in 500 fields following
the 533, are now input in $n of the 533 field. Subfield n
is repeatable.

The 011 field for linking LC control numbers has been
abolished in favor of the 776 $w.

When cataloging a microform reproduction or photocopy for
which you have a Library of Congress catalog record for the
original, record the Library of Congress card number of the
original in field 776 $w of your record, as shown:

     776 1$c Original $w (DLC) 24020326

                            TITLE ADDED ENTRIES

               246 fields with 2nd indicator 1
Other 246 fields in the order prescribed by
the rules Indicators for the 246 field:

FIRST INDICATOR -- NOTE CONTROLLER/TITLE ADDED ENTRY

0 - Note, no title added entry

Use in the rare circumstance where a note is useful for
identification of the piece but is not a useful access
point, for example, a generic title like "Report."

     245 00 Rainfall report.
     246 0 $i Some vols. have title: $a Report

1 - Note, title added entry

Use with most variant titles appearing on the piece.

245 00 Science in the Soviet Union, 1917-1981.
246 1 $i At head of title: $a Science and public policy

2 - No note, no title added entry

Use with entries made for machine filing only.

     245 04 The off/on switch
     246 2 Off on switch

3 - No note, title added entry

Use with alternative titles which are justified by the 245, such
as access to portions of the title, parallel titles,
alternative titles, and corrected titles.

245 00 African semminar [sic] series
     246 1 African seminar series

SECOND INDICATOR -- TYPE OF TITLE.

* Use this indicator to identify the source of the
variant title (not the source of the title proper).

* Use this indicator (or this indicator in combination
with $i) instead of a 500 note for variant titles.

[blank] - No information provided.

Use with title variations which do not appear on the piece, such
as spelled out forms and corrected titles.

     245 10 Superbowl XXIX program.
     246 3 Superbowl 29 program

* For title variations not on the piece, the first
indicator is usually 3.

Use with $i to explain the source of the variant title when there
is no specific indicator for that variation. The
subfield $i gives the introductory phrase, followed by the
variant title in $a.

     245 00 Computerized engineering index.
     246 1 $i Also known as: $a COMPENDEX

* For variant titles explained in $i, the first
indicator is usually 1.

Important points:

* The $a must be input before a title which follows a $i phrase.

* The cataloger may choose to use 2nd indicator "3"
[other title] instead of formulating a $i if the source of the
variant title is not considered important or is difficult to
describe.

0 - Portion of the title

Use 2nd indicator 0 when a portion of the title, such as
other title information, a part or section title, or an
alternative title, should be indexed as a phrase.

245 14 The Facts on File dictionary of troublesome words.
246 30 Dictionary of troublesome words

     245 10 Linda Goodman's sun signs.

             advisory services.
     246 30 Financial advisory services

245 00 Marcel Marceau, ou, L'art du mime
     246 30 Marcel Marceau
     246 30 Art du mine

* For access to portions of the title, the 1st indicator is
usually 3.

1 - Parallel title

Parallel titles given in the 245 are recorded with a 2nd
indicator 1.

     245 00 Japan report = $b Nihon.
     246 31 Nihon

* For access to portions of the title, the 1st indicator is
usually 3.

2 - Distinctive title

3 - Other title

Other title is used when access to another form of title is
needed, such as a variant form of a variant title. It may
be used instead of $i when the cataloger does not consider
it important to record the source of the variant form.

4 - Cover title.

5 - Added title page title.

6 - Caption title.

7 - Running title.

A running title is the title printed on the top or bottom
margin of each page of a publication. Titles appearing on
the eye-readable header on microfiche are also given value
7.

8 - Spine title.

$b - Remainder of title
