                   NACO PROCEDURE FOR CHANGING
            EXISTING NATIONAL-LEVEL AUTHORITY RECORDS

Revised: May 3, 1996

NOTE: For the most part, we are responsible for the content,
tagging, and coding of the entire record when we change anything
in it. In general the whole record must be fixed, although we are
not responsible for upgrading the content of existing 670s input
by other libraries.

Do not change a record just to delete the period at the end of
the heading. Delete only if changing the record for a more
substantial reason.

1. Edit the record in Pac for changes. (Download from the LCNAF
first if not already in Pac.) Add a 667 note indicating what
changes have been made (per local procedure) (e.g. "667 add
400").

2. Add a 910 that reads "naco [initials]".

3. Printout the Pac record.

4. On this printout, do the following:

     * Highlight or circle changes made.
     * Indicate any local references as such (will not be added
          to the national record).

5. If you are changing the 1xx, search the OLUC for DLC |c DLC
records with the old form of heading. If you find any bibs.,
write "BFM" on your Pac printout. Note also that this old
form should be one of the 400s with a subfield "w". The
subfield "w" will probably need to be coded "nne"; however,
do check the USMARC format for authority data for proper
     coding.

6. Forward Pac printout to the local NACO coordinator.

7. The NACO coordinator will lock, edit, and replace the master
record on OCLC using your highlighted changes. The record
will not be downloaded to Pac. If any BFM is necessary for
LC, the NACO coordinator will attach a message to the record
indicating said at the point of contribution.

POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND:

* For non-unique names, see reference sources, etc. to try to
break conflicts. Use a 675 (Sources not found) to cite
references consulted but which were not able to break the
conflict for you. List all such sources in one field
separating each source with a semicolon and "|a". E.g.:

     675 World of learning, 1996; |a LC database, 4/1/96; |a
          RLIN, 4/1/96; |a OCLC, 4/1/96

Also use the 675 for earlier or later forms of names of
     corporate bodies:

110 20 San Diego Convention and Tourist Bureau
510 20 San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau |w b
670 Morgan, N. San Diego where California began -- and
lives, 1957: |b cover p. [2] (San Diego Convention and
          Tourist Bureau)
675 Reasons why people move to San Diego, 1978: t.p.
(San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau)

[Note: There is no subfield "b" in the above example.]

* If you need to copy your record to a second index (author or
subject), remember to do so. The NACO coordinator only needs
one printout of either record in this case.
