Over the years, UCSD has generally followed LC treatment for uniform titles, with a few notable exceptions like limiting the use of uniform titles for personal authors to the uniform title authors list, and not using form titles for personal series for non-uniform title authors. UCSD also had various local practices that suited retrieval in our card catalog and, later, the InnoPac online catalog (first deleting 240's, then flipping 240's to 700 |t's, for example). While these local practices made good sense and reduced the authority work workload in a very localized environment, they have become less efficient as copy has improved, the shared national authority file has developed, we have integrated into more systems (MELVYL and Circuit), and as we seek to take advantage of cataloging resources and services such as PromptCat and AsiaLink.
In 1997, the Cataloging Committee formed a task group to re-evaluate UCSD's uniform title treatment. The task group reviewed all types of uniform titles, explored options for treatment, and studied the workload and determined that it would be more efficient and cost effective if UCSD fully implemented AACR2R and LC practice for all uniform titles. Also, since the quality and completeness of the LCAF and the quality of member bib records is now so high, the task force recommended that verification of uniform titles be decentralized and that individual catalogers should verify uniform titles and create authority records as needed. The Cataloging Committee approved these recommendations, and procedures have been prepared.
