Uniform Title Procedures for Copy Catalogers
Author: Shirley Higgins
Revised: April 10, 2000
Approved by: Cataloging Committee
Policy
1. UCSD will now use uniform titles in all cases, as defined by AACR2R and the
LCRIs. We will no longer limit the use of uniform titles for personal authors
to authors on the "UCSD Uniform Title Author List."
2. Catalogers will now be responsible for verifying uniform titles and
creating authority records, as instructed in the following procedures.
Procedures
1. Bounce the following types of UTs to Shirley:
-
Any UTs found on Pre-AACR2 copy.
-
Collective UTs (Works, Selections, Plays, etc.)
-
Anonymous classics, sacred scriptures (Bible, Koran, Talmud, etc.), manuscripts,
treaties, and translations or works entered under title (130)
2. Bounce music UTs to the Music Section.
3. For other UTs, assume that the UT on the copy is OK, unless it looks
funny or conflicts with InnoPac.
4. The only types of UT which may not appear on copy, but which catalogers
are expected to recognize and create, are translations and works published
under varying titles (which are not revised editions). See example
1.
5. Determine the type of UT you have and use the following procedures
to verify the UT and create authority records if needed.
240 Translations and works previously or simultaneously published under
different titles (such as simultaneous American and British editions with
different titles, but not revised editions).
1. Search InnoPac for an authority record:
-
If an authority record is found, and it matches the bib record, check for
a cross reference from the title of the piece in hand (245 |a). If
the cross reference is found, you're done. If there is no cross reference
from the piece in hand, add the reference, plus 667 "add", and 910 with
your initials, then you're done. NOTE: Do not add references from
246 titles found in the bib record.
-
If an authority record is found, but it conflicts with the bib record,
bounce to Shirley.
2. If there's no authority record in InnoPac, search the LC authority file
at Innovative:
-
If an authority record is found, and it matches the bib record, check for
a cross reference from the title of the piece in hand (245 |a). If
the cross reference is found, export the authority record, and you're done.
If the cross reference from your book title is not found, add the reference,
plus 667 "add" and 910 with your initials before exporting to InnoPac,
then you're done. NOTE: Do not add references from 246 titles found
in the bib record.
-
If an authority record is found, but it conflicts with the bib record,
print the authority record and bounce to Shirley.
3. If no authority record is found, key a new authority record, using this
format:
100 [indicator] [author's name, as found in 100 field of bib record].
|t [UT as found in 240 field of bib record]
400 [indicator] [author's name, as found in 100 field of bib
record]. |t [title from 245 |a of bib record]
910 [initials]
See example 2.
NOTE: Do not add references from 246 titles found in the bib record.
NOTE: Do not create an authority record if the 245 title
matches the UT, other than the language subfield. Simply use
the UT, with language, in the bib record.
240 Laws, collections of laws, constitutions, treaties, manuscripts,
papal communications, liturgical works. Other than manuscripts and
treaties, which may also be entered as 130's, these works are generally
entered under a corporate body (either a government or a church).
1. Search InnoPac for an authority record:
-
If an authority record is found, and it matches the bib record, you're
done. Do not add cross references from the bib record 245 or 246
fields.
-
If an authority record is found, but it conflicts with the bib record,
bounce to Shirley.
2. If there's no authority record in InnoPac, search the LCAF at Innovative:
-
If an authority record is found, and it matches the bib record, export
the authority record, you're done. Do not add cross references from
the 245 or 246 fields of the bib record.
-
If an authority record is found, but it conflicts with the bib record,
print the authority record and bounce to Shirley.
3. If no authority record is found, bounce to Shirley. (The UT establishers
will collect and evaluate examples and determine whether catalogers will
eventually create authority records for this type of UT.)
