AUTHORITY STREAMLINING FOR COPY CATALOGING
                   Effective November 26, 1991

The following procedures apply to all copy except:
UKM without LC precedent
Music Scores and Musical Sound recordings
NLC
Serials*
S&E*
CMRR*
Micros*
CJK*
Audio-Visual and Spoken Sound Recordings*

* Headings in these categories are currently being evaluated for
streamlining.

PERSONAL AND CORPORATE NAMES (INCLUDING CONFERENCES)
If no discrepancies exist between the form of the heading in the
book and the form of the heading on the bib record, and if no
cross references are required by local rules or for variant forms
found in the piece, accept the heading without further checking
in InnoPac or the LCNAF. No post-cataloging checking will be
done using the new headings list.

When discrepancies exist or cross references are required, follow
the existing authority procedures for verification and
establishment.

GEOGRAPHIC NAMES
Use your judgment with geographic headings. Many geographic
headings are straightforward and would not require further
checking, e.g. Modesto (Calif.). However, when encountering
unfamiliar headings, especially in foreign countries, the
existing authority procedures for verification and establishment
should be followed.

SERIAL UNIFORM TITLES
Do not send serial uniform titles to the Serials Section for
establishment as authority records will no longer be created for
these headings. Instead, check 630's and 730's consisting of
serial titles on Innopac. If no serial record is found on
Innopac, accept the form of heading on the copy. If a cataloged
serial record is found on Innopac, use that form. If the
cataloged serial entry on Innopac differs from the form on the
copy, change the form on the copy to match the serial entry on
Innopac.
