AUTHORITY RECORDS FOR CHILDREN'S SUBJECT HEADINGS

In late 1995, the Library of Congress indicated that it would
began adding children's subject headings (Annotated Card Program
[AC] Subject Headings) to the LC authority file on OCLC sometime
in 1996. UCSD is not currently using these subject headings, so
that they should not be used in cataloging. Catalogers should NOT
export these authority records.

On bibliographic records, they are tagged 650 _1 and are deleted
upon export. The authority records for these headings, however,
cannot be blocked from export. Catalogers should note that
children's headings authority records have fixed field "Subj" = b
and the 001 has the prefix "sj".

The AC describes itself as "intended primarily to provide a
liberal extension of LCSH" (Introduction, p. [1]). However, there
are some departures from LCSH. For example, the children's
heading "Actors and actresses" is in conflict with the LCSH
headings "Actors" and "Actresses".
