Personal emergency kit
When planning your kit, keep in mind that the personal kit should:
- Be comfortable to carry.
- Contain specific items like important identity documents and medications.
- Have enough food and water for at least 72 hours.
Recommended items:
- Yellow hard hat
- Safety light stick (check expiration date)
- Whistle (to signal for help)
- UCSD FM Auto Scan Radio with earphones
- Essential medications
- Essential identification documents
- First aid kit, freshly stocked
- First aid book
- Cash and change
- Water bottles
- Water purification kit
- Food, non-perishable
- Can opener (non-electric)
- Radio, battery-powered
- Flashlight, battery-powered
- Spare batteries
- Dust mask or cotton t-shirt to help filter the air
- Sturdy shoes
- Heavy gloves (for clearing debris)
- Blanket or sleeping bags
- Candles and matches/lighter
- Extra clothes, including underwear and socks
- Moist towelettes
- Towels
- Toothpaste
- Shampoo/ Body wash
- Feminine hygiene supplies
- Large plastic trash bags (for waste)
- Tarps and rain ponchos
- Toilet paper
- Knife or razor blades
- Paper & pen
- Plastic knives, forks, & spoons
- Plastic cups and bowls
- Heavy duty aluminum foil
- Paper towels
- Coil of ½-inch rope
- City map
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape for shelter
Please note: If you are on campus when a disaster strikes that prevents you from leaving the campus, shelter, food, water, and waste disposal are all provided for by the campus Emergency Operations Plan.
