CATALOG DEPARTMENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
1999-2000
GOAL 1. ACCESS: Provide timely, accurate, and effective access to information resources selected for our collections, whether held in our buildings or accessed remotely.
Objectives:
1. Catalog current materials without building any backlogs (includes tasks from copy search through export verification). Ongoing.
a. Develop procedures for DVD cataloging. By June 30, 1999.
2. Catalog backlogged materials as time is available, specifically targeting the following collections:
a. SSHL analytics (both cataloging project (4,109 titles) and conversion project (approx. 7,000 titles). By June 30, 2000.
b. Chinese copy cataloging from IR/PS (760 titles). By June 30, 2000.
c. SSHL Roman language IP collections (917 titles). Ongoing
d. California documents (324 titles). By June 30, 2000.
e. Maps (250 titles). Ongoing
f. Sound recordings (1,200+ titles). By June 30, 2000.
g. Japanese original monographs (600 titles). By June 30, 2000.
h. Cyrillic/Slavic monographs (120 titles). By June 30, 2000.
I. German monographs (120 records). By September 30, 1999.
3. Improve access to materials by maintaining and correcting records which link to other databases (Roger, Melvyl, Circuit, OCLC, LCNAF, Orion), specifically targeting:
a. Uniform title cleanup project (12,000 headings, finishing classical authors and continuing on with modern authors). Ongoing.
b. UN reclassification project (4,500 volumes). By June 30, 2000.
c. UGL transfer project (4,000 volumes). By June 30, 1999.
d. UGL deselection project (10,000 volumes). By September 30, 1999.
e. Annex task force/general deselection projects (unknown)
f. EAI authority records (2,000 records). By December 31, 1999.
g. Music Library videos and laserdiscs transfer to FVL (600 records). By September 1, 1999.
4. Improve accuracy of our bibliographic databases by cleaning up records identified through Collection Inventory pilot projects. Provide information by data collection for future inventory projects. By December 31, 1999.
GOAL 2. SERVICE: Sustain excellent customer service.
Objectives:
1. Continuously improve communication and responsiveness with the units that we catalog for to provide more effective support for their needs in the area of bibliographic control by improving mechanisms for input, requests, and response. Ongoing.
2. Conduct an annual throughput study during October 1999; document, analyze and publicize our processing time in comparison with previous years. By December 31, 1999.
GOAL 3. PROCESS IMPROVEMENT: Continually assess and refine processes to improve the quality and efficiency of operations, to develop the most cost-effective delivery of services, and to improve access to information resources.
Objectives:
1. Test and critically evaluate OCLC and Innovative Interfaces services and software for cost-effectiveness and throughput during this fiscal year, including Millennium products and Release 2000 upgrades. Ongoing.
2. Complete the centralization of Biomed and MCL Libraries cataloging operations in compliance with the PPD to standardize operations and gain efficiencies in processing and staffing. By March 31, 1999.
3. Upgrade all Wyse terminals to 486 (or higher) workstations. By June 30, 1999.
4. Improve the methods for counting, collecting, and maintaining cataloging statistics. By June 30, 2000.
5. Develop and use macros to expedite workflows. Ongoing.
6. Provide leadership within the UCSD Libraries, particularly in the areas of technical services, for process improvement. Ongoing.
GOAL 4. LEADERSHIP: Demonstrate leadership in information management and access through proactive strategies, advances in technology, and a commitment to development and creativity in problem solving.
Objectives:
1. Provide national and systemwide leadership in the development of policies and procedures for computer file cataloging, including Internet resources. Ongoing.
2. Participate in national, regional, and systemwide cooperative efforts as related to our cataloging and collection strengths and institutional goals, including acting as the Centralized Cataloging Agency for the California Digital Library (if asked). Ongoing.
3. Provide feedback and guidance in national cataloging efforts in our areas of expertise as opportunities arise (e.g., PCC, OCLC, and LC surveys). As opportunities arise.
4. Contribute to improving the quality of the OCLC database through upgrading and enhancing records through participation in the Enhance program. Ongoing.
5. Contribute to improving the InnoPac system through submitting and lobbying for enhancement requests through the Innovative Users Group and directly with Innovative.
6. Give presentations and contribute listserv responses and articles about UCSD policies and procedures. As opportunities arise.
7. Provide direction and leadership in the design and maintenance of a database to support the UCSD portal effort. By June 30, 2000.
8. Provide guidance and training for AAL catalogers in cataloging, authority control and database cleanup policies and procedures. By December 31, 1999.
9. Provide direction and leadership in guiding new SRLF processing policies and procedures under Orion2. By December 31, 1999.
10. Support the NASIG Conference (being held in San Diego in June 2000) as needs arise. By June 30, 2000.
11. Provide support for PRDLA database-related
initiatives, specifically through contributing expertise in Innovative's image
management softwar
12. Contribute to improving the Melvyl system
by giving input into processes leading to the selection of a new Melvyl system.
By June 30, 2000.
13. Work with the California documents bibliographers on developing a statewide project to distribute the cataloging of electronic California documents. By June 30, 2000.
GOAL 5. TRAINING: Sustain high levels of efficiency, productivity, and quality.
Objectives:
1. Develop staff in the areas of improved technical skills, sound job knowledge, and effective teamwork. As opportunities arise.
Action Plans:
a. Train department staff as requested on word processing software, email skills, writing skills, and Windows 95. By June 30, 2000.
b. Train monographic catalogers on adding electronic resource information to bibliographic records. By December 31, 1999.
c. Train catalogers in updated NACO techniques (e.g., macros) and have "refresher" on establishing NACO headings. By June 30, 2000.
d. Train catalogers on use of AACR2e and other features of the LC Cataloger's Desktop and Classification Plus. By July 31, 1999.
2. Actively develop the TPOT as our primary information resource for technical services issues and procedures. Ongoing.
Action Plans:
a. Review all cataloging documentation in TPOT and update or delete all documents that have not been reviewed since 1994. By June 30, 2000.
b. Update all documentation on authority work in TPOT, creating new procedures as necessary. By June 30, 2000.
c. Add Section web pages to support specific section needs. By June 30, 2000.
3. Utilize shared decision making skills and techniques in our staff meetings and our daily work environment. Ongoing.
