CATALOG DEPARTMENT GOALS 1998

Prepared by the Section Heads Group; June 23, 1998
Approved July 20, 1998

     ACCESS
Provide timely, accurate, and effective access to information
resources selected for our collections, whether held in our buildings
     or accessed remotely.

        Objectives:
                1. Catalog current materials without building any backlogs
(includes the work from copy search through export verification).

                2. Catalog backlogged materials as time is available,
specifically targeting the following collections: SSHL analytics
(both cataloging (3,885 titles) and conversion (approx. 15,000 titles)
projects), Chinese copy cataloging from IR/PS (120 titles), SSHL Roman
language IP collections (826 titles), California documents (506
titles), and Brieflisted materials (5,000 titles).

                3. Add records for unrepresented collections, specifically
targeting AAL slides (186,000 records), four OCLC Major Microform sets
(15,345 records), Korean original cataloging (160 records), FVL
Factual Film Archives (2,000 records), and SIO Archives media
     materials (104 records).

                4. Improve access to materials by maintaining and
correcting records which link to other databases (Roger, Melvyl,
Circuit, OCLC, LCNAF, Orion) (e.g., uniform title cleanup project,
     K-zero reclassification project)

                5. Enhance access based on questions or requests from
     units for whom we catalog.

     SERVICE
        Sustain excellent customer service.

        Objectives:
                1. Continuously improve communication with the units that
we catalog for to provide more effective support for their needs in
the area of bibliographic control by developing mechanisms for input,
     requests, and response.

                2. Conduct an annual throughput study during October 1998
to document and assess our processing time.

     PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
Continually assess and refine processes to improve the quality and
efficiency of operations, to develop the most cost-effective delivery
of services, and to improve access to information resources.

                1. Test and critically evaluate OCLC services and software
for cost-effectiveness and throughput during this fiscal year.

                2. Continue to centralize cataloging operations in
compliance with the PPD to standardize operations and gain
     efficiencies in processing and staffing.

                3. Upgrade all remaining staff workstations (19) to
Pentiums running Windows 95, and upgrade all Wyse terminals to 486 (or
higher) workstations by the end of the fiscal year.

                4. Improve the methods for counting, collecting, and
     maintaining cataloging statistics.

                5. Develop and use macros to expedite workflows.

                6. Provide leadership within the UCSD Libraries,
particularly in the areas of technical services, for process
     improvement.

     LEADERSHIP
Demonstrate leadership in information management and access through
proactive strategies, advances in technology, and a commitment to
development and creativity in problem solving.

        Objectives:
                1. Provide national and systemwide leadership in the
development of policies and procedures for computer file cataloging,
     including Internet resources.

                2. Participate in national, regional, and systemwide
cooperative efforts as related to our cataloging and collection
     strengths and institutional goals.

                3. Provide feedback and guidance in national cataloging
efforts in our areas of expertise as opportunities arise (e.g., PCC,
OCLC, and LC surveys, core record responses)

                4. Contribute to improving the quality of the OCLC
database through upgrading and enhancing records through participation
     in the Enhance program.

                5. Give presentations and contribute listserv responses
and articles about UCSD policies and procedures as opportunities
     arise.

     TRAINING
Sustain high levels of efficiency, productivity, and quality.

        Objectives:
                1. Develop staff in the areas of improved technical
skills, sound job knowledge, and effective teamwork.

                2. Actively develop the TPOT as our primary information
resource for technical services issues and procedures.

                3. Implement a training plan for the LC Cataloger's
Desktop and Classification Plus to expedite cataloging.

                4. Provide access to LC Cataloger's Desktop and
Classification Plus to all Catalog Dept. staff members.

                5. Incorporate shared decision making skills and
techniques into our staff meetings and our daily work environment.

                6. Develop training for catalogers on uniform title
     establishing and cleanup.

                7. Establish performance standards for departmental
     functions.
