CATALOG DEPARTMENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
                            1994-1995
     
     
1.  Provide accurate and appropriate bibliographic control for 
all library materials as soon as possible after receipt.
     
     a.  Decrease throughput time by 10%.
     b.  Catalog all materials with copy upon receipt; based on 
     subject area and timeliness, materials without copy will be 
     given prompt original cataloging or will be temporarily 
     recycled to in-process.
     c.  Process backlogs which have minimal or no bibliographic 
     access, including (but not limited to)
          - Minimal serial records for S&E (Burroughs records) 
          - CUL In-Process collection
          - IR/PS In-Process collection (books with copy) 
          - IPS materials
          - League of Nations (materials with copy)
     d.  Add appropriate authority records to InnoPac to 
     facilitate user search and retrieval.
     e.  Keep as few physical materials from library collections 
     as possible in the department.
     f.  Expedite the book labelling process through 
     technological innovations and analysis of labelling products 
     and procedures.
     
2.  Provide accurate and complete holdings information for all 
library collections in the CUL processing unit.
     
     a.  Process 100,000 titles from the CUL shelflist (shelflist 
     inventory).
     
3.  Improve cataloging efficiency.
     
     a.  Develop new and innovative ways to improve processing 
     workflows.
     b.  Improve training on Technical Services Workstations 
     (e.g., Norton Desktop for Windows, Mosaic) to more fully 
     utilize its capabilities.
     c.  Develop training sessions for appropriate online systems 
     (e.g., Gateway, TPOT, Prism authorities, specific aspects of 
     InnoPac, Melvyl, etc.) to increase and consolidate job 
     knowledge.
     d.  Improve access to cataloging procedures and tools by 
     working to complete documents in the TPOT, facilitate 
     indexing and links, and by developing access to the LC 
     Cataloger's Desktop and the Gale classification schedules. 
     e.  Improve individual job knowledge and enable effective 
     teamwork by addressing the continuing education needs of 
     departmental staff.
     
4.  Improve departmental responsiveness.
     
     a.  Solicit feedback from our constituents about how we are 
     doing, and take action on their suggestions.
     b.  Create a new CJK Processing Group which includes both 
     acquisitions and cataloging responsibilities.
     c.  Develop training plan(s) for new catalogers both inside 
     and outside the department.
     d.  Educate ourselves about the Internet and electronic 
     publishing and cataloging issues so we can contribute to 
     efforts to organize electronic information and better 
     position ourselves to catalog these materials.
     
5.  Participate in national cooperative cataloging efforts as 
related to our cataloging and collection strengths and 
institutional goals.
     
     a.  Submit name headings through NACO as appropriate to 
     original and enhanced cataloging.
     b.  Provide original cataloging and supporting name 
     authority records for Mexican political economy as part of 
     the Partners for Latin American Cataloging program.
     c.  Provide feedback and direction in national cataloging 
     efforts in our areas of expertise as opportunities arise 
     (e.g., PCC survey responses).
     
6.  Actively encourage and participate in Library restructuring 
efforts.
