Departmental Goals for FY 2005-06

  5. Foster increased staff awareness of broader metadata standards, issues, and trends. (Goal 1, Objective 3)

  7. Increase UC staff awareness and understanding of the Shared Cataloging Program. (Strategy 2, Objective 1)
  8. Provide leadership in cataloging and metadata at the systemwide, regional, and national levels. (Strategy 3)

Objectives from department brainstorming August 11, 2005
(to be further refined)

Goal 1: Ensure timely access to resources through data in our catalogs.

Objectives:

  1. Continue cataloging the MP3.com gift materials.
  2. Catalog 700+ video game gifts from Sony.
  3. Catalog Japanese videos.
  4. Hire acquisitions specialist and train.
  5. Catalog JSTOR monograph series.
  6. Implement shelf-ready processing and expand as appropriate.
  7. Conclude discussions on RUSH and NOTIFY items.
  8. Process direct access electronic resources.
  9. Conduct and report thruput studies at least annually.
  10. Cross-training – hire more staff or train more staff to catalog electronic resources.
  11. Better staff morale support.
  12. Set clear standards for expected throughput times for specific materials (e.g., rush/request items, NACO submissions, adding 856 URL links, etc. etc.)
  13. Awareness of staffing in the area needed.
  14. Reduce amount of non-science branch books that need copy searching.
  15. Hire 3 new original music catalogers.
  16. Increase staff morale.
  17. Realize full CONSER participation.
  18. Shelf-ready.
  19. Use thruput study to identify areas of weakness that need to be addressed.
  20. Pursue further purchasing of record sets.
  21. Get more TOC data.
  22. Get and load book reviews and cover images.
  23. Hire more staff.
  24. Load MeSH authority records.
  25. Load form/genre authority records.

Goal 2: Improve the quality of data in our catalogs and in the physical processing of library resources.

  1.   Send additional sets of older records for MARS processing.
  2. Streamline/ standardize processing of accompanying CDs and DVDs.
  3. Finish JSTOR transfer project to UC Shared Print Collection.
  4. Complete SCP serial record cleanup.
  5. Process backlog of MARS reports and fold in current reports to our workflow.
  6. Begin processing of OCLC bib notification reports.
  7. Do all the various weeding projects (e.g., BML, S&E, CURR, etc.)
  8. Ensure greater consistency and standardization in cataloging and richer data records.
  9. Begin CONSER authentication of OCLC serial bib records.
  10. Continue MARS authority processing.
  11. Investigate MeSH cleanup with MARS.
  12. Increase awareness of authority processing (i.e., what an “a” in the r-cntrl code means)
  13. Review TPOT documentation and procedures annually to make sure all catalogers are on the same page.
  14. Re-write procedures in TPOT.
  15. Change the way we report OCLC holdings and perform a reclamation project.
  16. Perform a reload of all MeSH headings.
  17. Continue to do all the weeding projects from all branches.
  18. Better speed on the quality of Millenium and Connexion.

Goal 3: Optimize work processes.

  1. Communication.
  2. Complete the TPOT Metadata project allowing for a smooth transition into a content management system.
  3. Develop a plan for reviewing, writing, updating department documentation.
  4. Fix temperature/ breeze problem.
  5. Increase use of batch processing for electronic resources, even though this means more staff. This will affect no. 1 as well.
  6. Optimize CJK processing for non-textual materials (i.e., music, videos).
  7. Identify ways global updating can be used to update data.
  8. Provide efficient catalog to CJK AV materials.
  9. Develop a new systems notification system for the department.
  10. Implement shelf-ready processing for approval books.
  11. Design new method for reporting thruput studies.
  12. Develop a macro page on TPOT to speed up processes.
  13. Implement Active Directory, allowing for faster deployment of software and more efficient centralized administration.
  14. Increase efficiencies of SCP batch processing of electronic monographs.
  15. Allow more flexibility of work assignments within the newly merged CCSU/OCU unit.
  16. Better equipment for students (printers in EV, faster computers, etc.).
  17. Review and recommend new technology, hardware, software to improve work processes.
  18. Kick Acquisition's arse once and for all!!!!
  19. Streamline discussion and decision-making of groups such as Cat Comm and MSDMG so that “parking lot” items are cleared.

Goal 4: Revitalize and regularize NACO participation.

  1. Communication.
  2. Integrate staff training for NACO processing on regular basis after the backlog.
  3. Produce a notebook (by categories) of examples of NACO work.
  4. Involve more catalogers in verifying headings, etc.
  5. Set specific timeline for catching up with backlog and set projected date for increased/follow-up training.
  6. Go through all backlogged NACO records and release staff from revision.
  7. Hold NACO contributor meetings.
  8. Train additional staff in NACO.
  9. Provide staff or student support to formalize NACO participation.
  10. Release catalogers from NACO review and reduce NACO backlog.

Goal 5: Foster increased staff awareness of broader metadata standards, issues, and trends.

  1. Provide workshops.
  2. Offer more talks on these subject areas.
  3. Sponsor workshop on latest metadata stds, issues, trends for staff.
  4. Involve everyone in metadata training to develop inhouse electronic resource catalogers and support staff.
  5. Bring in a series of speakers to address the basics of metadata (quarterly?, regularly scheduled).
  6. Have some workshops to have a broader awareness of metadata standards.
  7. Find a communication medium (blog, listserv) to which people can post new issues or trends in Metadata.
  8. Invest in staff development.
  9. Metadata training for all people interested (or mandatory).
  10. Have staff do presentations on metadata topics.
  11. Keep Ardys and Trish!
  12. Have short presentations at each department meeting.
  13. Provide series of mini-workshops to introduce basic standards and current project and provide comparison between standards and their application.
  14. Provide workshops on metadata.
  15. Share info. on emerging trends in metadata via email, blogs, newsletter.
  16. Cross-training and allowing staff to participate in different projects involving other kinds of metadata standards.

Goal 6: Increase UC staff awareness and understanding of the Shared Cataloging Program.

  1. Training and communication re: Shared Cataloging Program.
  2. Complete SCP campus presentations.
  3. Distribute literature and presentation on SCP to staff.
  4. Join LC cataloger Desktop training and ensure its accuracy and ease of use.
  5. (sort of miscellaneous) but investigate sending a file of serials which are CDL to OCLC to appear in Open World Cat.
  6. Create a report summarizing info. learned at SCP road show and including any recommendations for action.
  7. Invite campuses to UCSD for followup session to road trips.
  8. Continue the road shows.
  9. Develop an SCP newsletter.
  10. Communication/ meeting/ classes about Shared Cataloging Program.
