As much as possible, Access Services would like to control keys and access to Library departments. This is especially important outside of "normal" business hours, as they are concerned for our safety and security when there are fewer staff in the building. No keys may be loaned by one staff member to another. The following plan was developed to accomodate Catalog Dept. staff needs for access and to maintain a degree of security:

  1. The Department Head and the Division Heads will have keys.
  2. Staff who are regularly scheduled to work weekends, after 6 PM evenings, or who are responsible for opening in the morning, will have keys.
  3. For other staff working evenings or weekends, Access Services has set up a new procedure: Sign in on the evening/weekend sheet located in Circ, and check-out a key to either the Acquisitions or Catalog Depts from the Circ desk. This key may be used for trips to the stacks or restrooms, so you don't get locked out. If you are leaving for a prolonged period, say, for lunch on the weekends, sign out and sign back in when you return. This way, Access Services knows exactly who is in the building in case of emergency. Return the key to the Circ desk when your shift is over.  For security reasons, please be prepared to show your staff ID to Access Services staff who either let you into the department or check-out a key to you.

  4.

Students may work evenings and weekends only if their supervisor is present.  Either pre-arrange with your supervisor to let you into the Catalog Dept. at a specified time, or have someone at the Circ desk call your supervisor to come get you.  Students must also sign in on the evening/weekend sheet located in Circ.  If you need to get into the department for just a quick moment (to retrieve something from your desk, leave a note, etc.), either the Security Guard or an Access Services staff member will escort you in and out of the department.

Geisel building access on weekend mornings

Hi everybody - This is just a reminder of weekend building access procedures for Geisel staff and student workers.

On weekends or holidays when the Geisel front doors open at 10am, the SSHL Access Services opening crew are responsible for allowing other library staff and student workers access to the building between 9:30 and 10am. The door that is accessible is the single emergency exit door in the S&E planter area east of the front entrance doors. After the opening supervisor and/or security officer has disarmed the security alarm, they will let in any staff who are waiting outside the planter door. From that time until the front doors open at 10am, the planter door will be monitored to ensure that library staff have access but patrons don't wander in.

Depending on staffing levels and other opening duties, the opening crew may either leave the S&E planter door slightly ajar or keep it closed until someone is actually outside needing access. If the door is closed, staff will check it frequently and should respond immediately if someone is waiting. If an individual isn't known to us we may check ID and verify that they work here before letting them in. Students who work in non-public areas such as Acquisitions, Metadata Services, and ITD must have a staff supervisor present to be allowed into those areas on weekends.

Please let me know if there are any questions or problems - thanks!
