What is TPOT (Technical Processing Online Tools)?
TPOT is the official library technical services information resource for the University of California, San Diego libraries.
Library technical services at UCSD is generally understood to be the Acquisitions, Catalog, and Preservation departments in the Geisel Library, as well as their equivalent units in the various branches of the UCSD Libraries.
Visitors from other libraries and the general public are welcome to visit. Access to committee minutes, FTP downloads, and some technical information is restricted to UCSD Library staff members.
Mission of Technical Services
Technical Services in our library is part of a larger division named User Support Services (USS). The mission statement for USS is: http://libnet.ucsd.edu/uss.html.
The three departments within Technical Services also have their own mission statements:
Metadata Services Department: http://tpot.ucsd.edu/msd/admin/docs/who.html
Acquisitions Department: http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/acq/missionstatement.htm
Preservation Department: http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/preservation/mission.html
Navigation
From any menu, clicking on the TPOT graphic will send you back to the main menu. TPOT is intended to work with Netscape 3.0 or higher, or Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher, equipped with Adobe's Acrobat Reader, for PCs. Mac users will obtain best results using Internet Explorer 5 or above.
Committee minutes
Remote access to the restricted committee minutes on TPOT can be made available for individual library staff members who use UCSD's dialin service for Internet access. Remote access can also be enabled for library staff members who use a commercial ISP that assigns a permanent IP address to that member.
To request this access or for further information, send email to Michael Stuart.
Searching TPOT
TPOT uses the Google search engine which is managed by the library's Information Technology Department.
Portable Document Format (PDF)
Some technical services documentation that cannot easily be rendered in HTML, such as spreadsheets with graphics, are stored on TPOT as PDF files. PDF files may be viewed if your browser is configured with a helper application from Adobe, called Acrobat Reader.
FTP access
Some TPOT menus make FTP links to software and other files stored locally for convenient access. For licensing and security reasons, FTP access to such TPOT resources is restricted to machines in the library.
